Jay-Z & Beyonce Sued For Copyright Infringement Over ‘Black Effect’, Artist Says ‘I Feel Artistically Raped!’
Power couple Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Beyonce are being accused of copyright infringement over the song “Black Effect.” Jamaican arts figure Dr. L’Antoinette Stines recently filed a lawsuit against the Carters, claiming that she was misled into being featured on their duets album, Everything Is Love. The entire first minute of the song, “Black Effect,” features Dr. L’Antoinette Stines’ voice, stating these thoughts on love:
“Hmm, well there’s love of children
Love of self
Love of God
Love of a partner
All of them have a different shape
But all of them is the same in the end
It’s about sensitivity, it’s about passion
It’s about unconditional giving of self to another person
And there’s love of humanity
That’s the love that is right now needed most
Love of humanity
But in everything, in all of that love, there is a soul
It’s like when you take some eggs and break them
And you take the shells and mix them up
Trying to find the ones that match
And you find the perfect match
When you find the perfect match
That compatibility results in passion
Results in unconditional giving of self
I hope I can say that again”
Filed on Tuesday (June 16th), court documents state that Dr. Stines was summoned by the Carters in March of 2018 to corral dancers when she was asked to record an interview for “promotional purposes.” Uncredited for the intro, she was also allegedly not paid for the feature – which she said left her feeling:
“…artistically raped.”
Dr. Stines admits to signing documentation stating that she was interviewed for a promotional video but never had the paperwork reviewed by legal representation. The Jamaica native is suing Jay-Z and Beyonce for damages for copyright infringement and violation of her right to publicity.
Jay-Z and Beyonce have not publicly commented on the lawsuit.
