Tyler Perry Is A Billionaire!
Tyler Perry’s career (and bank account) has hit a major milestone!
The director and actor is Hollywood’s newest billionaire, according to Forbes. He’s said to be worth $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005.
Over the span of his decades-long career, Tyler Perry has released more than 1,200 TV episodes, 22 films, and dozens of plays. Recently, he made history when he opened his own Tyler Perry Studios in his hometown Atlanta last year, which sits on 330 acres. His movies alone have grossed almost $1 billion. He has 100% ownership in all of his content, which is a major key to what helped him reach billionaire status. See the breakdown below:
-$300 million in cash and investments
– $280 million for Tyler Perry Studios
– $60 million for his stake in BET+
-$40 million in homes and toys)
He said during an interview:
“Ownership for me was easy because I was underestimated. They said, ‘Sure, you can own it.’ They didn’t think it’d be worth anything.”
He added that he wanted his material to serve as a platform for those who are traditionally underrepresented in the media.
“I wanted to foster an environment where minorities and women and LGBTQ, anybody who wanted to come and work and do a great job was welcome. What I found is, if you invest in the underdog, if you invest in the people who haven’t had the opportunity, the level of gratitude and understanding for what is happening for them is so powerful. It’s just wonderful.”
It’s safe to say Tyler Perry has come a long way as he’s always been open about sleeping in his car in his days before fame. He first rose to the spotlight by playing his iconic character Madea in theater plays, some that went on to be adapted as popular films. That was only a launching pad into the mogul he’s developed into today.
