If you got it, it doesn’t make you any less Christian to flaunt it.
That’s the message Erica Campbell of Gospel group Mary Mary continues to spread nearly 10 years after she sparked controversy for wearing a white bodycon dress. While the singer was hoping to simply share her Grammy nomination for “A Little More Jesus,” Atlanta Black Star reported she was heavily criticized by the Christian community for looking “too sexy” to sing for the Lord and taking the attention away from his teachings. The dress in question featured a turtle neck, fully covered her body and went beyond her knees.
Speaking with the Frequently Asked Question Podcast, Erica Campbell explained:
“I’ve had people call me hoes and harlots … all kinds of stuff. I’ve had people say I’m in the illuminati . . . but that comes with the territory. If you’re not ready for that, it can make you retreat and be like, ‘I can’t do this.'”

She continued,
“Had any R&B singer had that, they would’ve been like ‘oh my God she’s so covered up. . . Christianity has a problem with sexuality.”
Campbell previously told Essence she was surprised by the controversy because it wasn’t her intention, and there needs to be an open dialog about Christianity and sexuality.
“This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are. I think that young girls shouldn’t only get sexy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I’m cute too.”
The award-winning singer and sister has long advocated body positivity and embracing who you are. As previously reported, she took to Twitter in February to share a message for anyone considering plastic surgery and or other enhancements. Campbell said,
“Hey! You don’t need the surgery! You’re fine how you are, embrace yourself LOVE YOURSELF as you are. Surgery isn’t bad but WHY DO YOU REALLY NEED IT?! YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL! Stop comparing yourself to others!! You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalms 139”
As Mary Mary‘s other half, Tina Campbell defended her sister against the judgement of religious people. In an interview with Rolling out she said,
“You’re looking at her looking nice, and yes, the dress is fitted and her body looks nice in it, but she’s not trying to ‘give it to you.’ The problem is God made her beautiful and it’s not her problem. Most of the people with the problem are mad that they can’t put that dress on and look the same way; that is their problem!”
