50 Cent Speaks On Former G-Unit Artists Blaming Him For Their Careers Not Taking Off: I Can’t Make People Buy Records
50 Cent is responsible for a lot of people’s careers–apparently, even the ones that didn’t work out.
During a sit-down with 97.9 The Box, 50 Cent opened up about the anger that some of his former G-Unit artists still hold towards him due to their lack of success in the music industry.
If you didn’t know, G-Unit Records was a label founded by 50 Cent in 2003. The celebrated imprint is known for housing fellow rappers Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, and singer Olivia Longott, among others.
While on the topic of investing in your dreams, the Queens, New York native spoke on the blame that has been placed upon him for not getting certain artists to where they felt they should’ve been back in the day.
50 Cent said:
“What’s ill is, when you’re in the seat–like, in the driver’s seat–a lot of times, every time [that] something goes wrong, it’s your fault. If you ask an artist why their career didn’t go the way that they wanted, [they say] it was the record label. So, I happened to become the record label. So, all of those artists that were around, that didn’t do exactly what they thought they was supposed to do, it’s my fault. They give it to me individually. [Like], ‘It’s not the company; it’s him.'”
He then went on to elaborate on his issues with lyricist Spider Loc, who used to be signed to G-Unit Records, and OT Genasis’ big break after leaving the label.
“Spider Loc, he was angry with me. I don’t know, like, if he had a hit, it would’ve worked. See what I’m saying? That just didn’t work. And, then, OT Genasis, I had him for a record. After that record didn’t work, he went and made a hit record. ‘I’m In Love With The Coco!’ That’s why me and him have the best relationship ever because he was let go to go do that. He went and made that hit and he made his money!”
However, despite a few people pointing the finger at him, 50 Cent stands by the fact that he could only do so much.
“[The artists] be upset because they felt like they could’ve did it. [As if they’re saying], ‘If you would’ve did it for me, [I would’ve made it].’ So it’s your fault [they] didn’t do it. You feel me? Like, you didn’t make the people [buy it]. I can’t make people buy records.”
Since the interview’s release, Spider Loc has spoken out on his YouTube channel.
