NBA’s John Wall Contemplated Suicide After His Mother & Grandmother Passed

NBA’s John Wall Shares His Struggle To Return To Basketball After Injury: I Thought About Committing Suicide
John Wall, 31, is ready to take on the competition as a point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, but he’s definitely had some setbacks along the way.
The former Washington Wizards athlete recently shared his career journey during an interview. John Wall said,
“I thought about committing suicide. Tearing my Achilles, my mom passing, my grandma dying a year later, in the midst of COVID. Me going to chemotherapy, sitting by my mom taking her last breaths wearing the same clothes for 3 days straight.”

He continued,
“I don’t like to brag about [it] because everybody goes through something, we all went through tough times, nobody’s got it easy. But I don’t think a lot of people could get through what I went through. To me, to be back on top where I want to be and see the fans still wanting me to play, having support from my hometown, their support period means a lot… in a time where I had to go find a therapist. A lot of people think ‘I don’t need help, I can get through it anytime,’ but you gotta find what is best for you and I did that.”
The most challenging events in John Wall‘s life date back the 2018-19 NBA season. He played just 32 games for the Washington Wizards due to a torn Achilles tendon, which ultimately caused him to miss the following season in its entirety. He joined the Houston Rockets for the 2020-21 season, but only played in 40 games before joining the Clippers as a free agent.
As if the struggles in his personal life weren’t enough, he also lost his mother Frances Pulley to cancer at the age of 58 in December 2019.
In spite of all his trials and tribulations, Wall credits his support system — and physical therapy — with helping him get back on his feet. Literally. He said,
“To me, to be back on top where I want to be and see the fans still wanting me to play, having support from my hometown, their support period means a lot… in a time where I had to go find a therapist. A lot of people think ‘I don’t need help, I can get through it anytime,’ but you gotta find what is best for you and I did that.”
