Skip Bayless Issues Apology For Controversial Tweet Questioning NFL’s Decision To End The Game After Damar Hamlin Suffered Cardiac Arrest On Field: Nothing Is More Important Than That Young Man’s Health

Skip Bayless is currently under fire following his tweet about Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin’s recent medical emergency.

On Monday (Jan. 2), Damar Hamlin underwent cardiac arrest amid a game — that has since been postponed — against the Cincinnati Bengals. Reportedly, paramedics were able to restore his heartbeat while on the field, and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further treatment. He remains in critical condition.

Subsequent to Damar Hamlin’s crisis, sports commentator Skip Bayless took to his Twitter account to share some of his thoughts. However, fellow users weren’t happy about Skip Bayless’ insensitive tweet about the NFL star’s tragic event, as his concern seemed to have shifted toward the halting of the game instead of Hamlin’s health.

He wrote,

“No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game – but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome … which suddenly seems so irrelevant.”

Skip Bayless’ tweet sparked controversy, with backlash from other public figures pouring in.

Jacksonville Jaguars’ Logan Cooke replied:

“This is the most inconsiderate thing you could have said. We are human beings not just numbers. You’ve obviously never stepped foot in a locker room or been apart of a family like this. We are a band of brothers! Get over yourself man… Praying hard for Damar and his family!”

Charlotte Hornets’ Isaiah Thomas weighed in,

“I hope they fire you bro!!! For you to even THINK of the game is very sad.”

TV personality Tami Roman also said:

“This was a very insensitive tweet when a young man’s life should be the primary concern, not this game.”

The 71-year-old ultimately came back with an apology, alleging that his words were taken out of context.

“Nothing is more important than that young man’s health. That was the point of my last tweet. I’m sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to.”

He further elaborated on the matter during the latest segment of his show, “Undisputed,” where his co-host Shannon Sharpe was notably absent.

When speaking of 24-year-old Hamlin’s injury and his response surrounding it, Bayless said,

“I apologize for what we’re going to set out to do here today–if it offends anyone–because we’re going to try to do the show pretty much as we usually do the show. But I’ll admit, upfront, I’m still shook up by what happened last night, to Damar Hamlin.”

He continued:

“In fact, I’m still wrecked. In fact, I’m not sure I’m capable of doing this show today. But, after barely sleeping on it, I decided to give it a try. Maybe I’ll fail, maybe we will fail, but we’re going to try.”

On Tuesday (Jan. 3) Damar Hamlin’s family issued a statement and thanked his supporters for the love. Currently, there are no updates on his road to recovery.
