Vanessa Bryant Reaches $29M Settlement In Suit Over Leaked Kobe Bryant Crash Photos

Justice was served for the Bryant family.

According to reports, Vanessa Bryant, 40, was awarded $28.85 million by Los Angeles County over Kobe Bryant’s leaked helicopter crash photos.

The settlement also included the $15 million a jury granted Vanessa Bryant on Aug. 24, 2022, after a federal court trial.

As you may know, on Jan. 26, 2020, the world was stunned after news broke that Kobe Bryant was traveling with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others to a youth basketball game when the helicopter they were aboard crashed. All nine passengers were unfortunately killed.

Following the tragic incident, first responders allegedly took photos on their cell phones of the deceased victims and shared them with colleagues. Reportedly, one individual even showed a stranger at a bar the graphic images.

During the 11-day trial, Vanessa Bryant testified that the surfaced images of her deceased family compounded her grief, leading to panic attacks.

Vanessa Bryant’s attorney, Luis Li, spoke on their win after the trial:

“Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant’s courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct.” 

Luis Li’s statement continued:

 “She fought for her husband, her daughter, and all those in the community whose deceased family were treated with similar disrespect. We hope her victory at trial and this settlement will put an end to this practice.”

After Vanessa’s initial win, the widow expressed that she will be donating the settlement proceeds to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. Mira Hashmall, the head lawyer representing Los Angeles County in the case, detailed the settlement  to be “fair and reasonable,” adding that the verdict, 

“resolves all outstanding issues related to pending legal claims in state court, future claims by the Bryant children, and other costs, with each party responsible for its respective attorneys’ fees.”

Co-plaintiff Chris Chester, who lost his wife and daughter in the crash, received a $19.95 million settlement.
