Update: Tory Lanez Retrial Hearing Postponed Another Week
Update: (Apr. 11, 2023): Looks like Tory Lanez‘s legal team needs a little more time to strengthen the entertainer’s case.
As you may recall, the Canadian native is looking at 22 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Last month, Tory filed a motion to have his guilty conviction overturned, claiming he didn’t receive a fair trial.
However, the prosecution has since slammed Tory’s claims, noting in a previously released statement,
“The evidence presented at trial was properly admitted, and the defendant’s claims of errors and violations of his constitutional rights are without merit…The verdict reached by the jury was based on credible evidence and was supported by the law.”
According to new reports, attorneys for the “Say It” singer recently requested a postponement in their client’s request for a retrial. Yesterday (Apr. 10) The Los Angeles Times court reporter James Queally shared,
“Morning! We’re back in court with Tory Lanez this morning. Reminder he will NOT be sentenced but a motion for a new trial will be argued. These motions are often a formality filed post conviction and are rarely, if ever, granted, so I wouldn’t expect fireworks today.”
He continued and shared that the “case is back on [the] calendar [for] next Monday.”
However, he then tweeted,
“Given the timing and possible need to respond to defense’s supplemental motion — prosecutors do not expect to retrial motion to be heard next Monday either, but hopefully a date will be scheduled.”
Original story: (Apr. 9, 2023): Jailed rap star Tory Lanez has his big day in court soon.
The 31-year-old is reportedly set to appear in front of a judge this Monday, April 10th, after motioning to appeal his guilty verdict in the infamous Megan Thee Stallion shooting case.
If you recall, Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in December of last year. The former friends got into a heated altercation back in July of 2020 which led to the Houston rapper, real name Megan Pete, 27, being struck by a bullet in the foot.
Due to the prosecution’s strong argument, Lanez was convicted on assault charges and is awaiting sentencing, or a new trial. As previously stated, the musician has motioned to the court asking to appeal the verdict, citing several “erroneous” errors made on the prosecution’s end.
However, the state attorneys recently responded, claiming Lanez’s motion is based on no merit. A statement released by the prosecutions office reportedly read:
“The evidence presented at trial was properly admitted, and the defendant’s claims of errors and violations of his constitutional rights are without merit…The verdict reached by the jury was based on credible evidence and was supported by the law.”
And continued:
“Therefore, the People respectfully urge the court to uphold the jury’s verdict and deny the defendant’s motion for a new trial,”
Additionally, the statement highlighted the “overwhelming” evidence that proved Lanez as the triggerman. The statement reportedly referenced “multiple eyewitnesses identifying the rapper-crooner as the shooter, the gun used in the assault found at his feet and his recorded apologies for the shooting.”
If Lanez is unsuccessful at his bid for a new trial he faces a potential 22-year prison sentence. The court will reportedly schedule him for a sentencing date later this month or early May should the case move forward.
