Coco Gauff May Soon Be Trained By Serena & Venus Williams’ Childhood Coach
Tennis player Coco Gauff may soon be coached by Rick Macci, the man who helped train Venus and Serena Williams when they were children.
During a recent podcast hosted by Patrick McEnroe, McEnroe stated that Rick Macci is looking to help fine-tune Coco Gauff’s game. He apparently sees great potential in the 19-year-old winning several major tournaments in the future.
On the ‘Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe’ podcast, he revealed that Macci has been in contact with Gauff’s current trainer, her father, Corey Gauff. He indicated the flaw in Gauff’s game is her forehand, according to Macci. McEnroe said that he believed Macci was the right person to correct that for her.
McEnroe said,
“Nobody better [than Rick Macci] at breaking down the technical aspects of the game. According to him, he’s been in touch with Coco’s father about possibly spending some time to obviously try to fix that forehand. Because we all know the forehand swing and the technique on the forehead is very shaky.”

McEnroe continued,
“And Rick said to me, if he could spend a solid amount of time with her, he thinks she can win multiple, multiple majors because right now it’s not solid enough off the forehand that he believes she can do it at the moment.”
Rick Macci recently noted that Coco Gauff’s forehand is her biggest weakness and must be addressed for her game to reach the next level.
On April 30, he tweeted:
“@cocogauff and her forehand will be addressed and will become her best shot someday. Needs time off with the exact biomechanical plan to reprogram the reflexes of 12 years and confuse the muscle memory. All the advice the past 5 years has been a band aid.”

Macci is familiar with Gauff and her father. He previously expressed how much potential she has as a player.
“I know Coco and her father, we’re all in Florida. She is the best pure athlete running on the WTA Tour. What that means is when you’re nervous, you can still play offense and defense. She can run, she’s a track star that has a tennis racket in her hand reminds me a lot of Venus as far as the strides and the running goes.”

Coco Gauff has a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in singles, reached on October 24, 2022, and world No. 1 in doubles, achieved on August 15, 2022. Gauff won her first WTA (World Tennis Association) Tour singles title at the 2019 Linz Open at the age of 15, making her the youngest singles title-holder on the Tour since 2004. She has won three WTA Tour singles titles and eight doubles titles – three partnering with Caty McNally and five with Jessica Pegula. Gauff rose to prominence with a win over former World No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the opening round of 2019 Wimbledon.
