Tyler Perry Seemingly Suggests Actors’ Union Should Accept Studios Recent Offer To End Ongoing Strike: ‘We Have To Know When We Have Won For Now’

Media mogul Tyler Perry is sharing his thoughts about the continued SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood.

The filmmaker praised the actors’ union for fighting so hard for fair pay, but lightly criticized the idea of keeping negotiations going until all their demands are met.

Reportedly, Tyler Perry addressed the topic during a recent appearance. After being asked to share his perspective on how things are playing out, the 54-year-old media exec stated:

“Here I am, a studio head and an owner of a streamer, but also understanding how it is for the working actor,”

He continued:

“I get what we’re fighting for…I paid Cicely Tyson $1 million for one day of work because when actors get to a certain age they’re pretty much discarded. Taraji P Henson talks about me paying her $500,000 years ago to set her quote…I understand the working actor…Fran Drescher and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and the whole negotiating committee has done a fantastic job moving this forward. They have gotten this way further than anyone thought we could get it. But it’s really important to know when we’ve won.”

It seems Perry’s statements come after the actors’ union failed to reach negotiations yet again with major studios. In case you’re unfamiliar, the strike began when Hollywood writers first decided to stop working back in May, seeking new contracts that they ultimately secured for better wages and long-term financial security. Actors joined the strike shortly after, sparking a full-fledged production strike, though the writers reached an agreement back in September.

A deal with the actors, however, reportedly fell through, with the union arguing that what they need and AMPTP’s latest offer, which they claim is their “best and final,” was still vastly different on essential items. Perry continued his discussion, explaining that trying to get everything in one negotiation when contracts will have to be renewed in the next few years may not be the best way to go about things. He reportedly continued:

“This is only a three-year deal. In two years [or] two and a half years, we’ll be re-negotiating again. So we have to know when we have won for now. That’s the thing. For now! If I had ran my business trying to get everything at once, I wouldn’t be here. I’ve got as much as I can for now, and let’s see what we can do next.”

At this time it’s unclear when negotiation will end, as the union has seemed unwilling to back down on issues they deem the most important. However, some recent reports claim that the union has stated they’re close to finalizing a deal.
