Tyler Perry Becomes Emotional While Speaking On Upcoming Project Dedicated To His Late Mother: ‘She Was Very Much That Special To Me’

Tyler Perry wouldn’t be where he is without his mother’s love.

The 54-year-old director appeared on The View on Tuesday (Nov. 7), to promote Maxine’s Baby, a documentary named in honor of his late mother Maxine Willie Perry.

Although Tyler Perry‘s mother passed away in 2009, host Sara Haines said she felt as though she had met the woman in person after seeing the film — evoking a lot of emotions.

Tyler Perry responded,

“OK. Wait a  minute. That took me… You met… Wow. You met my mother? You met my mother through it? Wow. Thank you. Oh my god. Wow.”

He continued,

“To say that you met her through that, that takes me somewhere, because this woman endured so much pain, and she didn’t have some legacy but she had me. To say that I was able to introduce her to you, you got me there, man. I’m sorry. Lord have mercy. Thank you for that. I appreciate that very much. Wow.”

As previously reported, Gelila Bekele, Perry‘s former longtime girlfriend/mother of his son, co-directed Maxine’s Baby, which tells the life of the iconic filmmaker.

Gelila Bekele recently took to Instagram to share her feelings on the film and the amount of labor that went into the project, noting that it took about 10 years to complete. She added,

“So much love and gratitude for everyone who has been [a] part of this journey.”

Perry — born Emmitt Perry Jr. — is most known for his legendary plays that spawned the character “Madea,” a boisterous, gun-wielding Southern matriarch.

The documentary explores the beginning of Perry‘s more than two-decade career in the entertainment business and highlights his difficult upbringing in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Maxine’s Baby will premiere November 17 on Amazon Prime, the streaming platform that Perry inked a four-picture film deal with in 2022.

As for why he got so emotional about Sarah Haines‘ comments on The View, Perry said,

“I just imagine a woman who’s lived her entire life with so much pain, and she was always worried about everybody else. I watched her get sick, I watched her get cancer, I watched her have all of these things, because her intention was, ‘Are you happy? Are you OK?’ She never put herself on the list. She never thought she was important, and she never thought anybody would care. So to say that this documentary… introduces her to the world, that moves me ’cause she was very much that special to me.”
