Grammy-Winning Songwriter Tiffany Red Blasts Beyoncé, Zendaya, Tamar Braxton, & Sevyn Streeter For Allegedly Taking Publishing & Failing To Pay Their Writers Fairly: ‘When I Think About My Own Career & All The People That Have F*cked Me Over, It’s Been My Own People’
Tiffany Red is never afraid to speak up and speak out.
In a recent Instagram Live, famed songwriter Tiffany Red expressed her frustration toward mainstream artists, accusing them of not sufficiently paying songwriters.
Tiffany Red has already been uber-vocal about her advocacy for the fair compensation of songwriters. So much so that she founded The 100 Percenters, an organization dedicated to the rights of music creatives.
Her latest conversation surrounding the topic at hand stemmed from rapper Jay-Z calling out The Recording Academy’s failure to grant his wife,Beyoncé, an ‘Album of the Year’ award.
Jay-Z said while on stage with his and Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy:
“I don’t wanna embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won ‘Album of the Year.’ So, even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that… the most Grammys [and] never won ‘Album of the Year.’ That doesn’t work.”
Red challenged Jay-Z’s comment in a reel, where she sarcastically said:
“So, let me get this straight, Jay-Z expects Beyoncé to win ‘Album of the Year’ when all the songwriters that contributed to these albums are not compensated and she takes an obscene amount of publishing from all of them?”

She followed up with a couple of more posts, citing the importance of entertainers like Queen Bey “modernizing” their business practices and giving all publishing to the songwriters on songs they didn’t help write.
Red also mentioned singers Zendaya, Tamar Braxton, and Sevyn Streeter–all of whom she’s written songs for.
With 17 years in the industry under her belt, the music veteran cited in her broadcast,
“Almost every artist that I have ever written for has gotten publishing on the record. Almost every record that I have done, I have written when the artist was not in the room. I’ll go through my own songs. On ‘Replay,’ Zendaya got 10 percent of the publishing… I think. She did not write on the song, she didn’t. That song was written at a Rihanna song camp. It was on hold for Rihanna, then it was on hold for Rita Ora.”
Red continued:
“Zendaya got publishing and writer credit–she did not write on ‘Replay.’ Um, ‘King’ by Tamar Braxton… I wrote and produced that song. I wrote that song for myself as an artist. In my living room! In my living room. [laughs] Tamar got… I don’t know… I don’t know what she ended up getting. I think I own like 85 percent of that song, but I should own all of it because I did all of it! She didn’t write sh*t!”
However, it was Sevyn Streeter who she said she was the most “hurt” by. Red added,
“Sevyn Streeter… who’s a songwriter! This one really hurt my heart. Sevyn Streeter… ‘Just Being Honest.'”
She furthered:
“Sevyn ended up with 10 percent of that record. I fought like h*ll for her to not have any of the publishing because she didn’t write anything on it. Publishing is my only source of income!”
Although Red has never partnered with Beyoncé, she said that the ‘Renaissance’ icon’s alleged lowballing upset her, especially, with the level of influential power that she has.
Stating that she has associates who didn’t get the proper credit while working with the superstar, she went on,
“The reason why people who work for Beyoncé don’t talk is because they’re all on NDAs. Because that’s also how she works, she silences people so that nobody could speak. I’m not a writer that’s written for Beyoncé. I haven’t shot my shot at Beyoncé because I’m not willing to give her any publishing. Not because I haven’t had the opportunity, I’ve had the opportunity to work with everybody. And I’ve turned down a lot of stuff because I’m not willing to play these games! There’s a massive power dynamic happening.”
She concluded,
“Please don’t act like it’s easy to negotiate with Beyoncé and her team! Because it is not. If that was the case, there would not be so many people coming to me like, ‘Tiff, this is how much was taken.’ Sh*t is not negotiable! It’s not!”
Additionally, Red said she feels like the artist should be responsible for their business affairs, including having their songwriters on a reasonable payroll.
Over the past few months, you may have gotten acquainted with Red through her support for friend/singer Cassie amid her controversial lawsuit against Diddy.
Red confessed that she witnessed some of the alleged sexual abuse that Cassie went through during her relationship with the Bad Boy mogul in an open letter published online.
