Michael Jackson’s Estate Blasts Auction For Not Clarifying Listed $100,000 ‘Thriller’ Jacket Was Not Worn By Late Singer
After being called out by Michael Jackson’s estate, an auction house had to change their title for an alleged “Thriller” jacket.
Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction house is gearing up to sell off a so-called “Thriller” jacket. According to the listing, the bid will start at $100,000 but the item is expected to sell somewhere between $300,000 and $500,000. Initially, the company reportedly had the easily recognizable jacket listed as “Michael Jackson 1983 Owned & Worn Thriller Jacket.” It’s said that they expressed in the description box, however, that the piece of clothing is not the one for the classic music video.

Despite this, Michael Jackson’s estate wasted no time calling out GHRR for not seemingly leading with the important information.
According to a report from TMZ, a letter was sent to GHRR from Michael Jackson’s estate demanding they alter the title of their listing. Jonathan Steinsapir – the estate’s attorney – reportedly said in the document there are only two genuine “Thriller” jackets that exist. And one of those jackets sold in a previous auction over a decade ago for nearly $2 million. The estate was purportedly fearful that the price of the dupe item could mislead the public into thinking the authentic “Thriller” jacket had significantly decreased in value over the years, which could negatively impact the “Beat It” singer’s brand overall.
Thankfully, there won’t be any need for legal action as GHRR has changed its previous title to clarify the listed jacket was not worn by MJ. The new title added the word “style” to better help potential buyers immediately know that MJ’s famous look inspired the listed outerwear. But just in case there’s still any confusion, the description also added,
“The jacket is similar to the jacket worn in the “Thriller” video.”
