UPDATE: Trump’s Tariff Hike Sparks Global Tension As China Fires Back w/ 125% Duty On U.S. Goods

Update (April 11, 2025): The trade war is back on and the stakes just got higher.

After President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports, China responded by slapping a 125 percent duty on a range of U.S. goods! The escalation has triggered recession fears and sent global markets into a tailspin.

The White House claims the move is meant to protect American jobs and industries. But economists and trade experts are warning that everyday consumers will feel the impact. Prices could rise on items like cars, electronics, clothing, and groceries. Supply chains are also expected to slow down, hitting both small businesses and major retailers.

China’s retaliatory tariff is one of the highest seen in this ongoing trade fight, and it directly targets American exports like agricultural products and manufactured goods.

Financial markets have already reacted. Stocks fell sharply and investors are bracing for more volatility. These tariffs affect the price of what people eat, wear, and drive every day.

Original Story (April 9, 2025):
Donald Trump is hitting pause on his broader tariff wars—except when it comes to China.

The president announced today (April 9) on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. is implementing a temporary 90-day pause on tariff increases for more than 75 countries, except for China. He wrote in the post:

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.”

He continued:

“Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries… have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The announcement marks a sharp pivot from previous Trump administration messaging earlier this week, which reportedly insisted there would be no delay or pause in the proposed tariff hikes, sparking backlash from American economists and business leaders who warned of potential recession risks.

Despite the sudden change, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the move, stating that the pause was part of a broader negotiation strategy, insisting the announcement is “not a reversal.”
