Judge Blocks Trump’s Attempt To Shut Down Education Department
Whew, this one’s big. A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order to shut down the U.S. Department of Education, putting one of his most controversial moves on hold.

U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston issued a preliminary injunction on May 21, ordering the agency to stop the shutdown plan and reinstate employees laid off earlier this year.

A lawsuit was filed by the Somerville and Easthampton school districts, along with the American Federation of Teachers and other education groups.

They argued the layoffs were an illegal attempt to dismantle the department, which is responsible for student financial aid, special education services, and civil rights enforcement in schools.

Judge Joun agreed, writing that the mass terminations would likely “cripple the Department” and cause “irreparable harm,” particularly for vulnerable student populations.

This is not a final ruling. The injunction halts the plan, for now, while the lawsuit moves forward, meaning the administration could still fight the decision in court.
