Kevin Durant Says He Fell Into Depression Over His Appearance: “I Was Insecure About How I Looked”
NBA superstar Kevin Durant is opening up about a vulnerable chapter in his life, revealing that even at the height of his career, he has faced moments of insecurity and self-doubt.
In a recent appearance on Bobbi Althoff’s podcast, Durant admitted that he once battled depression tied to how he viewed his own appearance. “Sometimes. I’ve been stressed, depressed before. Like once,” he shared. When Althoff asked what triggered those feelings, Durant replied, “Just like I was insecure about how I looked. It was crazy.”
The 35-year-old athlete explained that those insecurities intensified during his early twenties, when his lean build and tall frame made him feel different from his peers. “I feel insecure about how I look every day. So, I just didn’t—I don’t know. It just hit me all at one time,” he said.
Durant described eventually breaking through that mindset by reframing how he saw himself. “I just snapped out of it because this is stupid to even care,” he recalled. “Nothing is wrong with how you look. That’s how I got out of it.”
Durant also mentioned that standing over six feet tall as early as age 12 made him feel like he stood out “for no reason,” contributing to his early struggles with confidence.
His openness marks a rare glimpse into the mental health journey of one of basketball’s biggest names, showing that success and fame don’t make anyone immune to self-doubt.
