The Oscars To Air Exclusively On YouTube Beginning In 2029
Times are changing, and the Academy is doing what it can to keep up.
The #AcademyAwards will make a historic move to YouTube beginning with the 101st Oscars in 2029, after decades of airing on broadcast television. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has struck a multi-year deal giving YouTube exclusive global rights to stream the Oscars through 2033, including the main broadcast as well as red-carpet coverage and behind-the-scenes content “for free worldwide.”
In announcing the partnership, Academy leadership said the shift will significantly expand access to what they called one of film’s most cherished traditions. “We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with #YouTube to be the future home of the #Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor. YouTube’s CEO Neal Mohan added that the move will help bring the Oscars’ celebration of storytelling and artistry to “a global audience,” potentially inspiring a new generation of filmmakers and fans.
