Pistons Legend Isiah Thomas Says He Spent All His NBA Money to Pull Family Out of Poverty
Isiah Thomas says his NBA paycheck wasn’t about luxury — it was about survival and responsibility. The Detroit Pistons legend revealed that he used his basketball earnings to lift his family out of poverty, explaining that his money went toward stabilizing loved ones who were still struggling back home.
“I spent all my NBA money cleaning up my family,” Thomas said, describing how his financial focus was never centered on personal indulgence. Instead, the Hall of Famer said his priority was removing relatives from dangerous environments and creating safety and opportunity where there had been none.
Thomas, who grew up on Chicago’s South Side, has long been open about the conditions he came from. He previously explained that without basketball, his family’s circumstances could have remained unchanged — a reality that drove how he chose to spend his earnings once he made it to the league.
Beyond financial support, Thomas said he also pushed family members toward independence. He shared that he offered internships within his businesses to nieces, nephews, and cousins so they could learn real-world skills rather than rely on him long-term.
While Thomas went on to earn championships, accolades, and business success, he’s made it clear that none of that compares to the impact he had at home. For him, the real win wasn’t what he bought — it was who he was able to help.
