Nicki Minaj Talks Meeting Lauryn Hill, Twerking & Postponing New Series
On Monday, Nicki Minaj called into the famous syndicated morning show, The Breakfast Club. The interview was on the heels of her recent performance at Tidal X held at Barclays Stadium this past weekend. Minaj was very candid with DJ Envy, Charlamagne, and Angela Yee as she talked about meeting Lauryn Hill for the first time, her comedy series, new music and more. Peep the excerpts below.
On meeting Lauryn Hill:
She was in the room right next to me the whole time. And I was kinda nervous to even run into her in the hallway. Then all of a sudden I literally said the words, ‘Do y’all realize my idol is right there?’ And within 30 seconds of me saying that, she walked into my room. I told her, ‘I want you to know this. You changed everyone’s life.
On her Marie Claire Cover:
What’s so funny about the Marie Claire though I don’t think people realize, the MC interview was done like so many months ago, and even those pictures was taken so many months ago. When it came out people think it’s recent but it’s not, it just looks epic.
On her forthcoming comedy series:
It’s postponed because a lot of things were happening at the same time. And, creatively, we wanted to make some changes [um] with the pilot. I want to, we’re taking our time. Everyone involved, Aaron Kaplan, everyone involved, wants it to be perfect, and I felt like there were other things that needed to be figured out first.
On the landscape female hip hop:
Oh um well, I got a thing for Young M.A. Something about her, Something about her man, I really love. I’ve met Dej Loaf, I think she’s dope, too. I feel like it always hard. People act like just being a female rapper is hard, but being a male rapper and being taken seriously is hard, too. We’re in the era of mumble rap and its men, and some of it is super dope and some of it is like, ‘Okay, let’s see where this goes.’ But it’s always difficult becoming a staple in hip-hop. It’s only a few superstars who become staples in hip-hop.
On new male rappers that she likes:
So shout out to all the women coming up that are paying attention to lyrics. I don’t have anything against anything. I love a lot of the new guys, too. Like, I feel like they’re super fun. I love Lil Uzi, I love, I love the melodies. Like, I love Fetty. Uh, I did something with Fetty that’s gonna come out soon that I think is super dope. It’s not easy for anyone. So anybody that’s trying to do rap and all of that, trust me you gotta have really super thick skin and you have to really be passionate.
On if she was putting out another mixtape:
I think when artists are in their mixtape season, they don’t have rules, they don’t give themselves rules, and one of the most freeing things is just doing what the hell you want to do and having fun. And I think during that time, I just did what I wanted to do. I didn’t think anybody was gonna really hear me, so I was like, hey, I’m free to make mistakes. You know, that’s the beauty of art. When you feel that you’re free to make mistakes, it propels you to another level of just freedom, so I’m not closed off to it. One thing, I definitely won’t tell anyone what, if I was working on a mixtape. I wouldn’t tell anybody that. I would just surprise my fans with it, you.
On who twerks better her and Safaree:
[giggles] Uh well first of all, you have to compare my twerk video on my Instagram cause that’s the one that’s epic……He can’t do better than that. Now the one at TIDAL, yes [giggles].
