WGN America’s hit show Underground may be in jeopardy of cancelation. Here’s why: Sinclair Broadcast Group is acquiring WGN parent-company, Tribune Media and a number of television stations. They are also acquiring WGN America. According to a report, after the higher performing series Outsiders was cancelled last month, there was speculation that WGN America may no longer run original scripted programming. Sony is reportedly shopping the series around.

It’s a complete pause at WGN America. It’s unclear if they’ll still have scripted there. I had something being shopped there, and talks suddenly just stalled. They’re figuring out what they’re going to do and if they even continue on with scripted.

Underground is a TV period drama series created by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski about the Underground Railroad in Antebellum Georgia. The show debuted March 9, 2016, on WGN America.

If you care about this story and about our history being preserved, please tweet your support of this show. Tweet to John Legend, to WGN, tweet to other networks to encourage them to pick it up. “They” who hate having to see their history so boldly confronted on this show would love nothing more than to squash the stories being told via these narratives from Underground, and it’s up to us, the Underground supporters to use whatever influence we have to make sure these stories are heard. The voices crying out from the past must not be silenced, now it is more crucial than ever for a show like this to exist on American television to be shown to the world.
