“Insecure’s” Issa Rae Talks Kofi Siriboe Dating Rumors & Personal Struggles: I struggled with confidence.
Issa Rae On Kofi Siriboe Dating Rumors & Personal Struggles
Since the premiere of Insecure last summer, Issa Rae has unequivocally became a staple in Hollywood and has no plans on stopping anytime soon. Aside from the show, Rae has been persistent when it comes to having an extended resumé. The author, show creator, and producer has been working with on the rise writers via YouTube. Rae has helped produced series like milk + honey, GIANTS, and more via her YouTube channel.
As Rae readies the season two premiere of one of social media’s most talked about show, she pulls up to the The Breakfast Club to talk about what fans can expect in the new season, women’s hoe phase and more. Peep the excerpts below.
On the difference in feelings between feelings of before the premiere of season one of Insecure:
I’m nervous, but I’m more excited this time around. I think season one I was mad nervous.
On how she is dealing with the sophomore jinx:
You always have pressure coming into the second season. People be like, ‘are you about to top season one?!’ And that was on elf the things we focused on; I didn’t want to come out the gate – even in the writer’s room – we want to keep it grounded, and stay in these real people’s heads and that we are telling an authentic story. It’s not about twists and turns. So, I’m nervous, but I feel really strongly with all the stuff we are exploring this season.
On new things the show explores this season:
A bunch of stuff black women talk about, but you don’t get to see on TV. We dabble into the hoe phase.
On her three categories of a woman’s “hoe phase”:
The first category of women are like, ya know, ‘I wanna meet my King,’ ‘Or I wanna keep it locked.’Then I think, there are some women who engage and they’re like, ‘I’m about to have fun. I’m about to fuck all I can, and get my numbers up.’ And some of those women are, unfortunately relegated into a specific category in guy’s eyes as hoes. And the third category women are just able to double dutch into hoe-ery and they can get their fix and then they can jump and they’re done.
On if she and Queen Sugar star Kofi Siriboe are dating:
Dang! I did not know I would be blasted in this way! But you know, I’ve seen him around. No secret dating.
On her difficult times in relationships:
I like to call them transgressions. For me, it was always a defense mechanism. I didn’t want to have feelings for people. It was like either ‘cheat or be cheated on.’ And it was just a stupid way to think.”
On if cheating is justifiable:
No, I don’t think so. I think you have to communicate with your partner at all costs. Like it’s unfair to not tell your partner.”
On if she is working on a movie with Ava DuVernay, Rihanna, and Lupit Nyong’o:
Twitter is so powerful. To even have my name in the running for that, but every time I’m asked that question, I defer to Ava. Whatever she says is what the words is.
On her feelings towards not being nominated for an Emmy Award:
It would have been amazing. It would have been a good look for season two, but it just makes me want to work harder.
On different challenges she experienced growing up:
I struggled with confidence. I think my confidence was shattered in various moments and that’s always affected how I operate.
I mean, how I looked. I was overweight. I was from Senegal, coming to the states for the first time. Changing schools every two years. Always reintroducing myself. It’s not different from any other person’s adolescent years. I just took it really hard.
On if she’s writing a new book:
That sh-t was hard [when writing Awkward Black Girl]. Things have changed. I was a lot younger when I wrote it. So there are some experiences I’m like, ‘girl, what are you talking about? You don’t even think that way anymore.’
Other projects she’s working on:
Yeah, I’m writing a couple of movies now. I have opportunities to be in other movies. But I love staying behind the scenes. Still constantly producing online via YouTube.
On what she thinks the longevity of the show would be:
I’m not telling. I hate when things are drawn out. I love when things have a beginning, middle, and end.
On the first time she got a perm:
I love my natural hair. But for awhile, I was struggling with like, ‘how do I wear my hair?’ ‘Nobody else is wearing their hair like this!’ It’s all about weaves or relaxing your hair. I begged my mom to let me do it and she was like, ‘you can’t handle it.’ And then, I did it, and of course my hair fell out. She was like, ‘I told yo bald headed ass you shouldn’t have done that.’
On her strip club experience:
First of all, I went there – someone else brought me there – it was a group of girls. I was throwing $20’s because I was a rookie. I probably spent like $500 that night. It was too much of a line to get change.
On if she slept her way to the top:
No, I did not f*ck my way to the top. First of all, I’m not at the top so that would have been a very poor f*ck if that were the case.
