Will Smith To Star As Runaway Slave In ‘Emancipation’ Film, Antoine Fuqua Slated To Direct
Will Smith, 51, is set to star in the new thriller “Emancipation,” which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua. The based on a true story film will show Will Smith, portray Peter, a runaway slave forced to flee and outwit slave hunters on his journey to the Union Army and his only chance at freedom. Production is expected to start early in 2021.
Will Smith, James Lassiter, and Jon Mone will produce the film through Westbrook Studios, along with McFarland Entertainment’s Joey McFarland and Escape Artists’ Todd Black. Antoine Fuqua will also executive produce under his Fuqua Films banner, alongside Cliff Roberts.
Both Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua were in the middle of productions that had to be paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Will Smith was filming Warner Bros.’ biopic “King Richard,” where he will portray the father and coach of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams. While Antoine Fuqua was in the post-production process on Paramount’s action thriller “Infinite.”

Will Smith is also set to star in Father’s Day documentary “Dads” alongside Kenan Thompson, and it will be documentary available on Apple TV+ June 19th.
In a recent episode of his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s, hit Facebook talk show – “Red Table Talk” – Will, Jada, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and their children, Willow Smith, and Trey Smith, spoke to an expert on the coronavirus because he feels that his movie ‘I Am Legend,’ is responsible for misinformation about COVID-19. Will Smith said:

“I wanted to do this because…I made ‘I Am Legend,’ so I feel responsible for a lot of the misinformation…There was a basic foundational comprehension of viruses and viral pathogens.”
