T-Boz Reacts To Jermaine Dupri’s Claims That He Seemingly Discovered Her Low Register, “I Was Rocking The Low Notes At 17 Years Old”
TLC singer T-Boz, born Tionne Tenese Watkins has a few words for music mogul, and industry peer Jermain Dupri. During a recent episode of T.I.‘s ExpediTIously Jermaine Dupri is said to have taken credit for giving T-Boz her low register in her songs.
T-Boz and her group member Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas are now responding to JD’s claims of giving her, her low tone, but did admit that he had a part in making her feel comfortable to sing that low.
She began her statement saying,
“The other day when J.D. was on your show, and the reason I have to say it here is because it was said here, some things were very inaccurate. It was like a revision of history… And the thing about my story is, I have proof because facts are facts.”
T-Boz says that she sang at an audition, where Jermaine Dupri was in attendance, and she performed Guy’s “I Wanna Get With U,” stating that she was inspired by Jody Watley’s “Still a Thrill,” where she showcased her low range,
“That song was how I figured out I could really sing deep, I was rocking the low notes at 17 years old.
It wasn’t like he looked at me and was like, ‘Oh, this blonde girl, I’mma make her sound deep. The reason he knew I could sing deep is because the night that I sang in the audition, I was singing deep and I sang Guy then.”
She does however give Jermaine Dupri credit for making her feel comfortable enough to take her low register and make it hers,
“I was afraid to do that as my thing. That’s what made him put me on Kris Kross’s demo, because he heard me doing it already.”
He really did make me feel confident in doing something I was already doing,
I give people credit for what they really did.”
T-Boz continued on saying that she’s not upset at JD for taking credit, but needed to reveal what she says is the truth.
“I’m not even mad because he’s always like my brother. I hate that I even have to come and explain it because I don’t like explaining s**t. But the thing is, that’s why I told you in the beginning, as a woman, you can’t take that from a man. That kind of s**t in this industry matters.”
