George Floyd – Ex-Officer Charged W/ His Death, Derek Chauvin, Can Leave Minnesota Due To ‘Safety Concerns’
Derek Chauvin, 44, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd is allowed to leave Minnesota to live in a neighboring state due to “safety concerns.” According to a Hennepin County judge, The Minnesota Department of Corrections has provided evidence supporting “safety concerns that have arisen” in Derek Chauvin’s conditional release supervision. Subsequently, the judge ruled that he was changing the conditions of his release to allow Derek Chauvin to live either in Minnesota or neighboring state.
The judge’s order also states that Chauvin’s new address will be kept confidential in the public court information system. He must have a cell phone with him at all times and answer all calls from the department of corrections.
Chauvin faces charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter after video footage showed him kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for roughly eight minutes, which led to Floyd’s death during an arrest on May 25.
On Wednesday (Oct.7), Chauvin was released from prison after posting a non-cash bond for $1 million. He was arrested and charged with third-degree murder a week after George Floyd’s death. His charge was later changed to second-degree murder. The other three officers involved, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
