Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Regina King, Don Cheadle, Leslie Odom, Jr., John Boyega, Daniel Kaluuya & Andra Day Receive Golden Globe Nominations

The 2021 award season is in full swing and some of our faves are getting the recognition they deserve. The Golden Globe nominations were announced Wednesday, Feb. 3.

The late Chadwick Boseman is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama for his performance in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which was his final performance.

His co-star, Viola Davis, is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama.

Andra Day received a nod for the same category after portraying Billie Holiday in Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday. She previously opened up about how far she went to channel the late singer.

She said,

“I basically abused my body for a long time. I’m joking and not really joking…I put my family through it; I put myself through it. I went from 163 pounds to 124 pounds. I would talk like her and I don’t drink or smoke, but I started smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Not that I recommend people do this; I just was desperate because this is my first role.”

Don Cheadle is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series for his role in Black Monday on Showtime.

Congrats are also in order for John Boyega, whose performance in Small Axe garnered him a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Popular project Hamilton is nominated for Musical or Comedy.

Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr. is also nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture thanks to his portrayal as Sam Cooke in Regina King’s “One Night in Miami.”

He revealed in an interview with Buzzfeed that he originally didn’t want the role.

“I kept getting phone calls from friends of mine who were going in for Sam Cooke, and they were like, “Have you been in for Sam yet?” And I was like, “Nah, I’m good. I don’t need to do that.” My agent sent me the audition material and I said, “Respectful pass. Thank you so much.” I only say that because I thought the shoes would be ill-fitting, you know? I just I thought that there must be someone somewhere that was better suited than me.”

He explained why he changed his mind and said,

“I had enough things going on that I was separating myself a little bit from all that had come before and it just didn’t seem all that wise for me to go try to impersonate somebody else. I was finally in a place to show the world who I am. But my agent and my manager called me and they said, “We think you’re making a mistake.” They never called me like that about something before. They said, “We think you need to take a look at One Night in Miami again. And I was like, well, if you guys are calling me like this, let me heed your advice. And so I did.”

Daniel Kaluuya is also nominated for Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture after his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah.

“Speak Now” from Regina King’s One Night In Miami received a nod for Best Original Song — Motion Picture.

Regina King herself is nominated for Director of the Year. She along with two other female nominees, Chloe Zhao of “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell of “Promising Young Woman”, made history as this is the first time multiple women have been nominated for the award.
