Meryl Streep Says She Was ‘So Depressed’ While Filming ‘Devil Wears Prada’, Never Broke Character On Set
Meryl Streep’s role as Miranda Priestly is one of her best to date. But the Oscar-winning actress says the strategy she used to execute the part took a toll on her.
Meryl Streep explained in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight that she practiced method acting – when an actor stays in character for the entire shooting of the film or movie.
Considering how callous and brutal Miranda Priestly was as the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Meryl Streep said,
“It was horrible! I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing. I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss.'”
She added,
“That’s the last time I ever attempted a method thing!”
Actress Emily Blunt, who portrayed Miranda Priestly’s assistant also said,
“Meryl is so gregarious and fun as hell, in some ways it wasn’t the most fun for her having to remove herself.”
She later clarified that Meryl Streep was never “unapproachable” on set.
Anne Hathaway, whose character Andy, was hired as Miranda Priestly’s second assistant, added that even though she was “intimidated” by Streep, she “always felt cared for.”
“I knew that whatever she was doing to create that fear, I appreciated [because] I also knew she was watching out for me.”
Streep’s performance landed her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
