Serena Williams Announces She Will Not Participate In The 2021 Tokyo Olympics: I’m Not Thinking About It
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics will host an array of great athletes this summer, but Serena Williams will not be one of them.
Yesterday (Sunday, June 27th), Serena Williams spoke with reporters about the 2021 Wimbledon Championship, which began today (Monday, June 28th). However, she also took the time to address the upcoming Tokyo Olympics–and how she will not be playing at the event. Serena Williams said:
“I’m actually not on the Olympic list… not that I’m aware of. And if so, then I shouldn’t be on it.”
As for her reasoning, she offered a vague explanation, saying:
“There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision. I don’t really want to… I don’t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry.”
She continued:
“In the past [the Olympics have] been a wonderful place for me, but I really haven’t thought about it, so I’m going to keep not thinking about it.”
Throughout Serena Williams‘ career, she has won a total of four Olympic gold medals. She first won gold in women’s doubles at her Olympic debut in Sydney, Australia back in 2000. Eight years later, she won another gold medal in the same event in Beijing, China. Then, she won two more gold medals in London, England for her 2012 performance in both singles and doubles.
The postponed 2021 Olympic Games will take place from July 23rd to August 8th in Tokyo, Japan.
