Bernie Mac’s Daughter Recalls His Aggressive Parenting: His Celebrity Didn’t Exempt Him From Making Mortal Mistakes + Says They Made Amends Before He Passed
Just days before the 13th anniversary of Bernie Mac’s death, his only daughter Je’Niece McCullough shared what it was like growing up with the comedian as her father.
She said on the “Can We Talk?” relationship podcast,
“I think it’s important (to discuss) so people can understand he was a mere mortal and his celebrity didn’t exempt him from making (and growing from) mere mortal mistakes.”
She added that his iron-fist parenting included rage and frustration that she later realized made her “walk on eggshells” in her marriage.
“If he was happy, we were happy.”
She recalled the Kings of Comedy star calling her “weak” and “soft” and said he frequently chastised her for not fighting back at school. She revealed that she found it difficult to defend herself and wasn’t able to do so until just before he died and after she welcomed her own daughter.
Fortunately, she went on to say that they came to a resolution before he passed on Aug. 9, 2008. He was 50 years old.
He apologized for his past aggressive ways and began to provide her with the physical affection she always wanted.
She explained that he“always said he wouldn’t live past 50.”
She added whether she believes Bernie Mac, who died of complications from pneumonia, made things right because he knew he would pass soon.
“He might’ve known, on some level.”
Je’Niece McCullough, who proudly goes by @berniesdaughter on Instagram, concluded,
“I was complete. Thankfully, I can honestly say my father gave me complete closure and peace by the time he passed.”
