Mo’Nique Set To Film Netflix Comedy Special After Settling Previous Racial & Gender Discrimination Lawsuit
Looks like famed comedian MoNique’s project with Netflix is officially moving forward!
According to reports, Netflix recently announced filming details for the 54-year-old entertainer’s upcoming comedy special. Reportedly, Mo’Nique is expected to film in Atlanta at the beginning of August for the project. The announcement comes just one month after the Mo’Nique and Netflix reached a settlement in the lawsuit she launched against the streaming service.
Back in 2017, the Phat Girlz star turned down a deal with the media platform, subsequently suing them for racial and gender discrimination. Mo’Nique claimed she was offered significantly less money for a comedy special than her male and white counterparts. In the suit, Mo’Nique alleged she was only offered $500,000 to appear in a show. While two of her fellow famous comedic peers, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, were respectively offered $40 million and $60 million.
Additionally, Mo’nique cited how her white comedic counterparts such as Amy Schumer, Ricky Gervais, and Ellen DeGeneres had millions poured into their shows. The Precious actress even noted how Schumer, a much newer comedian compared to the longevity of Mo’Nique, was able to negotiate her deal up $13 million.
After years of battling and winning support of a court judge, however, it seems the Oscar award winning actress was able to get her just payday. Last month, Netflix reported they reached a settlement in the lawsuit with Mo’Nique, though the amount awarded remains undisclosed.
Further details about the upcoming comedy special are expected to be released soon. Mo’Nique is also set to star in Lee Daniels upcoming Netflix horror pic The Deliverance which also stars Andra Day and Tasha Smith.
