In a recent interview, singing legend Usher elaborated on how he felt about the recent social media controversy surrounding R&B being dead. Usher said:
“You know when I hear people say stuff like, you know, ‘what happened to R&B’ or ‘R&B is dead,’ it’s not, you just don’t understand the basis of it.”
The 43-year-old continued:
“Matter of fact, maybe I need to remind them in understanding of what it is. How can something come out 20 semi years ago, and all of a sudden have a resurgence in a way that people just wanna mean, talk about it, sing it, you know, enjoy it. It’s because it’s classic. That’s “Superstar,” that’s R&B, that’s what R&B is.”
The “Confessions” singer added:
“R&B is timeless. It ain’t gonna go away. It’s not gonna have a beat. So when I do hear people, even like Puff saying, you know, ‘R&B is dead,’ he sounds nuts to me, it sounds crazy, you know? Especially knowing that he was a pioneer in understanding, a beneficiary of it. You know? The source that is R&B created the breath of life, that was breathing to hip-hop. It wouldn’t be, there would be no hip-hop if there were no R&B.”
Usher, born Usher Raymond IV, said:
“So it’s blasphemous to hear people say anything, especially hip-hop cats, to say anything about R&B. It’s like nah, it’s been there it’s gon stay there, as long as you exist, then it’s there, cause that’s where y’all got it from.”
As previously reported, during an Instagram live with music producer Timbaland, P. Diddy announced:
“R&B is muthaf–kin’ dead as of right now. The R&B I made my babies to? R&B gotta be judged to a certain thing—it’s the feeling though, doggy. No, no, no. It’s a feeling. You gotta be able to sing for R&B and then you gotta tell the truth. R&B is not a hustle. This sh*t is about feeling your vulnerability.”
Following Diddy’s remarks, he took to Twitter to admit that his intentions were not to disrespect R&B artists. In a series of tweets he said:
“It’s been 3 days of the debate…This is the clarity of the message…It’s not disrespect to anybody. This conversation was out of love and me purposely wanting to bring attention to R&B! It was something that I saw the effect of the Hip hop and R&B balance. That balance is honesty and realness when it comes together, melodies, vulnerability and most importantly LOVE!!!”
He added:
“This message is that R&B game needs more love, vulnerability, support!!”
