Chef & TV Personality Gerald Sombright Becomes The First Black Man To Earn A Michelin Star

Le Guide Michelin awarded chef Gerald Sombright a star! 

According to reports, tire manufacturer Michelin presented their seemingly unrecognized sears onto the culinarians who appeared alongside Orlando, Florida chefs inside the Ritz-Carlton. It has been confirmed that television personality and chef Gerald Sombright of Knife and Spoon has become the first Black man to earn the honor of receiving a Michelin star. International Director of the Michelin Guides, Gwendal Poullennec, said:

“This very first selection of the Michelin Guide in Florida highlights glittery Miami, storied Orlando and breathtaking Tampa, offering a unique blend of international cuisine and Florida flavors. Local foodies as well as travelers will enjoy exploring these mesmerizing and rich Florida culinary destinations.”

However, Japanese-leaning and Eurocentric restaurants was awarded most of the praise while other cuisines such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Middle Eastern and Mexican weren’t noticed. 

Along with Gerald Sombright’s Knife & Spoon restaurant, other Orlando restaurants including Capa, Soseki, and Kadence received a Michelin star. Bombay Street Kitchen, Domu, Papa Llama, the Ravenous Pig, the Strand, Swine and Sons, and Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen, were granted a Bib Gourmand which is a Michelin appellation for  “good food at a moderate price.” 

Sombright’s steakhouse has been recognized for being the perfect restaurant for travelers who love to bond over a great dinner. On August 14, the chef took to Instagram to share his recognition. In a caption he said:

“Thank you @foodandwine for recognizing my talents . @chefjohntesar and the entire @knifespoonorlando team”
