Dominique Fishback Speaks Out In Support Of Halle Bailey Amid The Backlash She’s Received For Her Role In The Upcoming ‘The Little Mermaid’ Film, Actress Reveals She’s Also Dealing W/ Racist Trolls Over Her ‘Transformers’ Casting
With the recent release of the live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid‘ trailer, fans have been sharing their excitement over Halle Bailey’s new role. Unfortunately, not everyone is showing their support. The 22-year-old singer/actress has been receiving backlash from some seemingly racist critics who aren’t pleased that an African American woman is playing the Disney character Ariel.

With the unwarranted backlash, many fans and celebrities have been speaking out in support of the ‘Grown-ish’ star. Actress Dominique Fishback recently took to social media to show her solidarity and express her frustrations about when a black female lands a leading role in a film and is racially criticized. She wrote in part:
“She is me I am her!!… All the hate/racism that Halle is getting for the little mermaid is indicative of why it’s so hard to be a black woman/actress. The ridicule of our talent, features, history and hearts do take a toll. “

She then informed fans that because she will be featured in the upcoming ‘Transformers’ movie she is receiving similar racist remarks as Halle.
Dominique Fishback continued her message in another post, noting that she is not fazed by people comparing her to white actresses and that fans must support ‘The Little Mermaid’ when it comes out in theaters. She said,
“For the record I do not care that some folks think I’m not as pretty as the white girls…. that type of ideology is beneath me.. I only say that to say to anyone who loves me and loves what I represent… Going first… Is not easy.. Support Halle.”

In a recent interview, Halle Bailey opened up about her starring role in the live-action remake of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid.’ During the interview, Halle touched on getting the role, paving her own way, and the support her family gave her when critics voiced their dislike of a Black woman playing Ariel. She said,
“I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way. There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”

The ‘Do it’ singer then shared that her older sister Chloe Bailey and her family helped her get through the unwarranted backlash she received when she was cast in the Disney project. As previously reported, the ‘NotMyAriel’ hashtag trended on Twitter the day her casting was announced.
“It’s important to have a strong support system around you. It’s hard to carry the weight of the world on your own…It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.’”
‘The Little Mermaid‘ is set to be released in May 2023!
