Nelly Furtado Recalls Magazines Lightening Her Skin & Editing Her Body In Early Career
Nelly Furtado is taking a trip down memory lane and recalling the challenges she faced during her rise to fame in the early 2000s.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the pop star opened up about the industry’s beauty standards, revealing,
“I have olive skin, and they’d kind of lighten my skin a lot in photos… and kind of take my hips down all the time.” This experience influenced her song “Powerless,” from her 2003 album Folklore, where she candidly sings, “Paint my face in your magazines / Make it look whiter than it seems / Paint me over with your dreams / Shove away my ethnicity.”
Despite these struggles, Nelly reflects positively on her early career, crediting her strong support system.
“I felt so lucky and blessed. I always had such a good team around me, that was family,” she shared. Furtado emphasized the importance of self-assertiveness in navigating the music industry, saying, “You have to kind of have that sense of self… to listen to the tiny voice inside.”
Now back with her seventh album, 7, which released on September 20, Nelly is excited about this new chapter in her career. She added,
“The key for me… is just getting back into the craft. It’s like a whole new me, who’s stronger, braver, more confident.”
