New York Doctor Indicted For Prescribing Abortion Pill In Louisiana

Dr. Margaret Carpenter, a New York doctor, is facing an indictment by a Louisiana grand jury for allegedly prescribing abortion pills in violation of the state’s strict abortion laws.

The charges, which include criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, were filed against Carpenter, her company Nightingale Medical, PC, and a third individual. This is one of the first criminal cases involving a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to a state with strict abortion bans since the fall of Roe v. Wade.

Louisiana’s near-total abortion ban has been in effect since 2022, with violations carrying severe penalties, including up to 15 years in prison and a $200,000 fine.

Interestingly, this case could test New York’s shield laws, which protect doctors who provide abortion pills via telemedicine in states with abortion bans.
