Eddie Murphy Recalls Turning Down Role In ‘Rush Hour’ For ‘Holy Man’: ‘We Made A Horrendous Film’
Eddie Murphy is speaking out about the time he passed up a major role.
In a new interview with Complex’s Speedy Morman, the actor revealed that he turned down the role of Detective James Carter in Rush Hour, which eventually went to Chris Tucker, in favor of starring in Holy Man. Murphy recalled:
“They came to me, and they was like, it was two scripts. It was like, ‘It’s Rush Hour, and it’s going to be [an] action comedy, and you’re gonna be [with] Jackie Chan. And it’s action, summertime, running, and all this physical stuff.’”
He continued,
“And this other one was, ‘You in a robe in Miami.’ I was like, hey, hey, hey. It was a no-brainer! And we went to Miami, and made a horrendous film.”

Murphy also admitted to passing on other major projects, including the role of Hoke Colburn in Driving Miss Daisy, which earned Morgan Freeman an Oscar nomination.
