Charges
Captured #Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty Monday (Jan. 5) in a New York federal court to a series of dr*g trafficking and weapons charges, days after being captured by U.S. military forces and brought to the United States for prosecution.
The indictment unsealed over the weekend accuses the couple of narco terrorism, conspiracy to import coca!ne and weapons related offenses, with prosecutors alleging involvement in a large scale narcotics network.
Maduro, speaking through an interpreter, adamantly maintained his innocence in the courtroom. “I’m innocent. I’m not guilty — I’m a decent man,” he said, asserting his character while also stating he remains “still president of my country.” The proceedings mark the beginning of an extended legal process that will determine how the high profile case unfolds.
