[WATCH] Oprah Winfrey Snags Another One, Secures Interview With Jason Collins for ‘Next Chapter’
Oprah Winfrey has become synonymous in landing exclusive interviews and getting celebrities to open up about their personal lives for the world. Beyonce, Cissy Houston, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, Kim Kardashian and other celebs have spoken exclusively with Winfrey. Millions tuned in as she spoke with cyclist Lance Armstrong as he confirmed what had been suspected for several years–using performance enhancing drugs throughout his historical career. On the next installment of Oprah’s Next Chapter, airing Sunday, Oprah will speak with the first openly active gay athlete in a major sport, Jason Collins and his entire family (including his twin brother), in their first interview since the announcement.
Earlier this week, the 12-year-NBA veteran and current Washington Wizards center announced that he was gay in an upcoming article for Sports Illustrated. He stated:
I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.
I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.
The lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want.
Since coming out, Jason has sat down with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos to discuss his decision to come out publicly. Since the interview, Collins has received an abundance of support from fans, teammates, celebrities and both current President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton.
Collins recently had this to say about the support he’s received.
It was just your typical day when you speak to the president and Oprah. Truthfully, this whole experience has been humbling and kind of overwhelming. What I’m doing has been done before in sports. There have been lots of other pioneers. I’m obviously the first to come out in this country in one of the four major pro sports — basketball, baseball, football, and hockey. But some people would put soccer up there, too, and Robbie Rogers has already blazed a trail there. I’m just trying to live my life authentically.”
Oprah tweeted her excitement for the upcoming interview via Twitter:

Umm, wants children, African-American community is called prejudiced. Another example of our celebs throwing African-Americans under the bus. WTF did this giraffe do that is so wonderful, courageous and important? Did he find the cure for cancer, HIV? Is he going to pool his money with other black celebs to help the black people?
No, he cannot even get braces. So, his ex-fiancé (white girl) is shocked? I’m not, white women are the gateway to a black man’s desire to be butt plugged by a white man.
Omg….I’m too thru with you. Ha!
