Megan Thee Stallion – Carl Crawford Says He Didn’t Know About Rapper’s Roc Nation Deal Until She Announced It
Carl Crawford has opened up about his connection to rapper Megan Thee Stallion after discovering her recently. The former MLB star turned record label executive tells Off The Porch, how he came across Megan Thee Stallion before her music award-winning days, and how he felt when she signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
Carl Crawford said he found Megan Thee Stallion thanks to social media, which he actually didn’t believe in at first. He said stripper Maliah Michel, who Drake has name-dropped in his songs, posted Megan Thee Stallion, and he was immediately drawn to her.
“I just saw rawness you know, something different. Her sound was unique. In Houston we never had a rapper that embraced sexuality like she did. Most of the girls in Houston, they wanna rap like the dudes.”
“Being that I knew the culture and just knew what never came out of Houston made me know that she would work.”
There was speculation that Crawford was upset after Megan signed a management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation recently. Crawford said that he actually had no idea about the deal until Megan announced it. He also said his decision to team up with J. Prince was all before he knew about Megan’s deal with Roc Nation.
“That’s the industry. Unfortunately for whatever reason, I wasn’t tuned in about it. I had the powers that be, you know, come at me a certain way, and I had to go get J. Prince. Me and J. Prince made a post together before her post, but everybody thinks I did it after and was all upset. At the time I wasn’t even aware of her signing… It was a little strange. I chalk all my mishaps to the industry.”
He said the deal doesn’t impact his as a label at all.
“She’s still signed to us. She’s able to have a manager, it’s no big deal. She’s still signed to 1501. I just deal with that part.”
He said he’s teamed up with people who have connections to the likes of Nicki Minaj and Drake to help keep 1501 alive.
