Jhené Aiko Says New Album Is All Of Her Previous Projects Combined: This Is The Baby, But It’s The Evolved Version
Fans are counting down the days until Jhené Aiko’s newest album is released. Chilombo is slated for a March 6 release via Def Jam, and the singer is now telling her fans what they can expect from her third album.
She told Billboard of “P***y Fairy (OTW)”
“[It’s] in the key of D, so I played a bowl in the note of D, and that governs your sexuality. It helps balance out your sexual organs like your navel and your hips. So even though the song is fun and sexy, there’s an actual instrument in there [inspiring that energy].”
She said of the album, which is also her last name (her full birth name is Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo):
‘Chilombo’ is a word that means ‘wild beast’ — they’re strong, confident and grateful,” she says. “Beasts are also beautiful.”
Along with “P***y Fairy”, Jhené Aiko dropped two more singles from the album, which have brought in 363 million streams already: “Triggered” last May and “None of Your Concern” in November, featuring her ex, Big Sean. The first two singles sparked rumors that they were getting back together.
She continued,
“In a sense, I am like a volcano, and this album is an eruption. It starts with ‘Triggered,’ and there’s a lava flow with all these songs where it’s a free-flowing jam session. We didn’t settle — and it became this beautiful land where there’s new life.”
She spoke on her evolvement over time and said,
“I’m still in transition, but I’m still me. I still love to write all types of songs and listen to all types of music, but Chilombo definitely has a lot more acoustic instruments because I wanted it to be music that you can feel. You can hear what the mic was picking up in the room. Everyone was playing actual instruments, [and] those resonate with you differently than digital. Chilombo is all of my projects that I put out prior to this combined. This is the baby — but it’s the evolved version.”
