Brandy: Me & Monica Were Put Against Each Other, The Fans & Media Threw A Wrench In That Experience
Brandy is opening up about the years-long feud with fellow songstress Monica.
In a new interview, she said she regrets not being able to truly enjoy the success of their hit 1998 duet “The Boy Is Mine,” which garnered the ladies a Grammy Award. The song was a massive hit as it spent 13 weeks at the very top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but the alleged real-life drama between them also took center stage.
Brandy, who is gearing up for her first studio album in 8 years titled B7, said,
“For us to be put against each other like that, I didn’t think that was funny at all. The fanbases and the media really threw a wrench in that experience.”
She added,
“Sometimes you get caught up in being popular and relevant, and that makes you lose the reason why you’re connected to music. I’m scared of that. I don’t ever want to get to a point where I’m doing music for the wrong reasons.”
Recently, Monica has also spoken out about their song and the possibility of joining in on a Verzuz battle on Instagram with Brandy. She says that she was pitted against others throughout her career and the only way she’d do a Verzuz match-up is if it were a celebration of both she and Brandy:
The reality is people have put us against each other for 20 something years. I think ‘The Boy is Mine’ is such a phenomenal record because we’re polar opposites and I think that’s dope, and she’s one of the greatest artists of our time as well so could we do a celebration or something of that sort? That would be the only thing that would make sense to me because I’ve been trying to tell people for about 25 years, you can like both. You gonna turn this into 1998 all over again and I have no interest in that.
