Snoop Dogg Signs On To Def Jam Records As Executive Consultant: Def Jam Was The Holy Grail Of Hip-Hop
Congratulations are in order for rapper Snoop Dogg who was recently hired for an executive role at Def Jam Records. According to a press release, Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Broadus Jr., has recently signed on as Def Jam’s new Executive Creative and Strategic Consultant. His new role will focus on A&R and creative development. Snoop Dogg will remain in L.A. while he reports to Universal Music Group Chairman/CEO Sir Lucian Grainge and Def Jam interim Chairman/CEO Jeffrey Harleston.
It’s no secret that Snoop Dogg’s former label, Death Row Records, and Def Jam were rivals in the 1990s. However, it seems that Snoop Dogg is past that drama and ready to move on. In a video he shared online, Snoop Dogg spoke on his new endeavor and said,
“Now, you may wonder why, so late in my career, would I wanna work for Def Jam Records? Well lemme tell ya, as a young rapper, Def Jam was the holy grail of Hip Hop.”
He continued,
“They did all types of sh*t I wanted to be a part of — and then Death Row happened. So, I didn’t get a chance to be on Def Jam, but I always had a dream to be on Def Jam and to be in the place where Hip Hop originated.”

During the 2-minute and 29-second video, Snoop Dogg explained what his priorities will be while working with Def Jam.
“So when I got the opportunity, my main focus on Def Jam Records was to go and help the artists, give them love, give them wisdom, guidance and understanding, and teach them some tricks I learned in the game; to diversify their portfolio, to not just be rappers, to not just be artists but to be superstars, superheroes, so to speak.”
He added,
“Now that Def Jam Records and Snoop Dogg is coming together for a collaboration you can look forward to a whole lot of great music videos, TV shows, content, video games, oh yea, and most importantly, hit records.”
Universal Music Group Chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge also spoke on Snoop Dogg joining the Def Jam family and said,
“We’re thrilled that the one and only Snoop Dogg is bringing his deep industry experience, strong relationships, boundless creativity and infectious energy to Def Jam.”
Def Jam interim Chairman/CEO Jeffrey Harleston added,
“I have had the pleasure knowing and working with Snoop Dogg for more than twenty years. Not only does Snoop understand what it takes to be a successful artist, he is one of the most creative, strategic and entrepreneurial people I know. Snoop has a genuine passion for the label and the culture, and we are all excited to have Snoop join the Def Jam Family.”
