ESPN’s Sage Steele Blasts Barack Obama For Identifying As Black Instead Of Biracial: That’s Fascinating Considering His Black Dad Was Nowhere To Be Found
Sage Steele isn’t holding back when it comes to discussing her views on racial identity and being biracial.
Some controversial comments ESPN correspondent Sage Steele recently made went viral over the weekend. Specifically, the 48-year-old commentator–who’s African-American and Irish/Italian–claimed she found it “fascinating” that Barack Obama identifies as Black when “his Black dad was nowhere to be found.”
The matter was brought up while Sage Steele discussed the subject of racial identity and the U.S. Census while on the Uncut with Jay Cutler podcast. Specifically, Sage Steele shared an exchange she had with someone over how she feels biracial people should approach the subject of racial identity.
“If they make you choose a race, what are you gonna put? Well, both. She’s like ‘Well, you can’t. Barack Obama chose Black and he’s biracial.’ I’m like ‘Congratulations to the President, that’s his thing. I think that’s fascinating considering his Black dad was nowhere to be found but his white mom and grandma raised him, but okay. You do you. I’m gonna do me.'”

Since Sage Steele‘s aforementioned comments began trending, many have responded to her with backlash. Among the many social media users who have blasted the correspondent for her statements regarding Barack Obama and race is investigative journalist Lisa Guerrero. She quote tweeted a video of Sage Steele‘s comments and wrote:
“My dad is white and my mom was a Chilean immigrant. I consider myself Latina even though she is currently “nowhere to be found” because (like Obama’s father) she is dead. @sagesteele is awful.”
Sage Steele has not publicly addressed the backlash yet.
