Jamie Lynn Spears On The Beginning Of Britney Spears’ Conservatorship: I Was About To Have A Baby, So I Didn’t Understand What Was Happening… Nor Was I Focused On That
Jamie Lynn Spears breaks her silence about Britney Spears.
Former Nickelodeon actress Jamie Lynn Spears made an appearance on Good Morning America to discuss her new memoir–and her strained relationship with sister Britney Spears. When questioned about her famous sister’s controversial conservatorship, the Sweet Magnolias star reminded naysayers that she was just as powerless in the situation.
The strict hold went into effect when a 17-year-old Jamie Lynn was with child. At the time, she had made a name for herself as the titular character of Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 (2005-2008). Her shocking pregnancy brought the show to a halt after three years on the air.
As tabloids plastered her face across magazine covers with headlines sensationalizing teenage pregnancy, Britney Spears was starting her “abusive” conservatorship. Jamie Lynn said that she was too young and distracted to understand or focus on the matter.
“When it was put into place I was 17 years old. I was about to have a baby, so I didn’t understand what was happening. Nor was I focused on that. I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”
At the height of the “Free Britney” campaign, fans of the singer slammed Jamie Lynn, assuming that she ignored her sister’s dire circumstances. Britney added fuel to their suspicions when she recently unfollowed her. Jamie Lynn explained that while she wasn’t interested in handling Britney’s finances, she did show her support.
“I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter. So when she needed help, I set up ways to do so,”
She continued:
“[I] went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family. If it’s going to cause this much discord, why continue it?”
Jamie Lynn claimed that she once tried to reason with Britney’s legal team, but that conversation “did not end well.” She said, ultimately, it was Britney’s choice to “walk through the door” that she’d opened for her.

The world was first introduced to Jamie Lynn Spears as the younger sister of pop sensation Britney Spears. Britney, who Jamie Lynn said her older sister “felt like another momma,” often showed her baby sister off in the media. By the early ’90s, Jamie Lynn had already made a brief appearance with her sister during a segment of The Mickey Mouse Club revival.
Later, she’d play the younger version of Britney in 2002’s Crossroads and earn a spot on the children’s variety show All That, where Britney guest-starred.
Although their relationship remains complex, Jamie Lynn stated that she will always love Britney.
“That love is still there. 100 percent. I love my sister,” she said. “I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her, and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”
