Along with the story of her choir roots which began in New Jersey, the musical film will also feature Houston’s tumultuous marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown – portrayed by Ashton Sanders in the film. Houston and Brown wedded back in 1992 and had one daughter, Bobbi Kristina.
The celebrity couple divorced in 2007 with their collective excessive drug usage publicly known to cause them friction. Drowning due to heart disease and cocaine intake ultimately led to Houston’s death in 2012 at the age of 48, with her solo heir passing away two years later at the age of 22.
The trailer also depicts Houston’s famous response to one of the biggest criticisms she received throughout her career. The “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer, who was often told that her music wasn’t “black enough”, eventually responded:
“Look, I don’t know how to sing Black, and I don’t know how to sing white either. I know how to sing.”
