Ed Reed Issues Apology After Being Accused Of Slamming HBCUs During Viral Rant About Conditions At Bethune-Cookman Campus: My Language & Tone Were Unacceptable As A Father, Coach, & Leader
Ed Reed recently had some not-so-nice words to say about his new coaching home at Bethune-Cookman University, and because of them… he’s deeply sorry.
Over the weekend, the head coach of Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, Ed Reed, took to his social media to vehemently address his complaints and concerns about the campus’ football facilities, but people weren’t too fond of his delivery.
On Sunday (Jan. 15), the NFL legend went on a rant about the reported trash-filled football grounds and the frustration he felt after having to clean up the facilities.
Apparently, upon settling into his new position at Bethune-Cookman University, his office wasn’t even prepared. In addition, during his live stream, Reed revealed that he hasn’t signed on the dotted line (to make things official) yet.
In a clip from the now-viral video, Reed is (seemingly) responding to backlash from naysayers under a prior video about the matter, where they were said to have accused him of bashing HBCUs.
Amid his tirade, he reportedly said:
“I just pulled up the work. We’re going to try to help y’all too man. Because I know a lot of HBCUs need help. I’m just here to help here first. I see it all too clearly. All of our HBCUs need help. And they need help because of the people who’s running it. Broken mentalities out here. I’m going to leave you with that. I gotta get in the office.”
While later detailing his agitation with the way things were going, the 44-year-old claimed,
“I’m walking out here with the football team… picking up trash. But I’m muttin’ us?! Man, get outta here, man! I should leave! I’m not even under contract doing this. I’m muttin’ us?! They muttin’ me! These motherf*ckers ain’t even clean my godd*mn office when I got here! I’m muttin’ y’all?! Get yo’ a**! Man, come on, man!”

Following Reed’s comments, he released a statement and apologized for his choice of language when discussing the subject.
The Louisiana native wrote,
“[In] regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism. My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach and leader.”
He continued by explaining that his passion for the culture added fuel to the fire, unintentionally causing what he said to come off aggressively.
“My passion for our culture, betterment and bringing out foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well. I am fully aware of the hard working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound.”
Reed concluded:
“I am encouraged from my communication with my AD and our administration and understand it’s a work in progress. My passion is about getting and doing better and that goes for me too.”
At this time, Bethune-Cookman University’s board has yet to publicly acknowledge Reed’s controversial “lecture.”
