‘South Side’ Canceled By HBO Max After 3 Seasons, Show Creator Hints At Finding New Home For Series: We Are For Sure Taking This Special Show Around The Town
Disappointing news for “South Side” fans…
According to reports, the comedy series, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, has been canceled after three seasons at HBO Max. “South Side” centers around two friends, Simon (played by Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme (played by Kareme Young), who are community college graduates aiming to better their living situation while working at a rent-to-own furniture store.

Actor Diallo Riddle — who played Allen Gayle on the series and is also the show’s co-creator — released a statement on the cancellation and said:
“I feel like if you’re gonna post about your highs on social media, you gotta post the lows. Lives and careers aren’t built on all wins, and everyone has challenges and setbacks. I’ll probably do several pic dumps in the coming weeks, but it’s because SOUTH SIDE means so much to us and so much to the city of Chicago and so much to me personally.”
He continued,
“We grew so much as writers, producers, DIRECTORS, and actors between Season 1 and Season 3. And we’re convinced the show has never lost one fan. We’re proud of that. And I’m truly gonna miss playing that goofball of an Alderman…for now. BUT don’t give up hope, South Siders! We are for sure taking this special show around the town, to see if it can find a new home, so STAY TUNED.”

A representative at HBO Max also spoke on the unexpected cancellation:
“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created.”
The rep continued:
“We thank them and Michael Blieden, Tony Hernandez, the supremely talented cast and crew and our partners at MTV Entertainment Studios.”
The rep added:
“For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor. The result was a wholly unique, ambitious and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”
The first season of the show debuted on Comedy Central in July 2019. It was later renewed and moved to HBO Max for a second season, which aired in November 2021. Season 3 premiered in December 2022.
In addition to Diallo Riddle, Sultan Salahuddin and his brother Bashir Salahuddin (who played alderman Allen Gayle and police officer Goodnight) are credited as creators of the series.
