Michael Jackson – Dr. Conrad Murray Opens Medical Institute 12 Years After Involuntary Manslaughter Conviction

The doctor who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson has opened up his own medical institute.

Last month, the DCM Medical Institute opened in Trinidad and Tobago. At the launch event, Dr. Conrad Murray spoke on the rejection he faced when returning to Trinidad and what led him to start his own institute.

Murray said,

“When I came back to Trinidad, most of the colleagues whom I had trained felt that I was too much of a threat to be present, when all I was willing to do was to collaborate, further educate and instill care for more and more. So they decided to eventfully lock the doors when they saw the cases I was performing.”

He added,

“It was tough. I dealt with the country locking its borders for two years but I did not give up. I felt that I had to be relentless.”

Murray grew up in Trinidad and Tobago after migrating from Grenada with his parents.

In 2011, Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said at the time,

“This is a crime where the end result was the death of a human being. That factor demonstrates rather dramatically that the public should be protected.”

Throughout the six-week trial, Murray was portrayed as a reckless doctor who administered a nightly drip of propofol, an unpredictable and potentially fatal anesthetic. Jackson reportedly paid Murray $150,000 a month for his services.

According to prosecutors, Dr. Conrad Murray was negligent by failing to use proper monitoring equipment and devices to help Jackson breathe under heavy anesthesia.

However, defense attorneys argued that Michael Jackson had already determined propofol was the only solution for his insomnia prior to hiring Murray. His attorneys and a medical expert said Jackson secretly took several tablets of the sedative lorazepam the morning of his death, causing the entertainer to die suddenly.

Murray was sentenced to four years in county jail however, he ultimately served two years of his sentence.

Following the conviction, Murray had his licenses in Texas, California, and Nevada suspended.

He later moved to Trinidad and Tobago where he was able to obtain a medical license.
