Kirk Franklin Blasts Christian Community For Supporting Donald Trump Without Questioning His ‘Problematic’ Lifestyle
Kirk Franklin didn’t hold back in his recent remarks about the Christian community.
In a recent interview on Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast, Kirk Franklin, 54, didn’t hold back, sharply criticizing the Christian community for its uncritical support of prominent figures like former president Donald Trump, who is currently running for re-election.
Kirk Franklin said,
“Sometimes when somebody acknowledges or says that they are Christian or represent their faith, everybody in the Christian community wants to jump on it. You also see that even in the white Christian community. If Donald Trump says that he’s a Christian, then all the evangelicals vote for him even though there are so many things about his life and lifestyle that are problematic to the Christian ideal.”
Kirk Franklin appears to be referencing Donald Trump’s controversial history, including allegations of infidelity with adult film actress Stormy Daniels and subsequent denial, his conviction for falsifying business records, and being held liable for sexual assault, among other actions that may be viewed as inconsistent with Christian values.
Franklin continued with his criticism of the faith community’s tendency to embrace celebrities without holding them accountable Addressing rapper Kanye West, he said:
“We’re so thirsty as Christians. We’re so thirsty for attention that we’ll tag on to anybody who gives a little bit of hint that they rock with us. [But] we don’t do life with them. We just kind of rest in their celebrity. I saw it first hand many times with Kanye. He’s such a talent, he’s such a gift, there were many times that the faith community was so excited to latch on that nobody asked the hard questions. Nobody talked about accountability, nobody talked about the community around this individual. We become field negroes and we miss the bigger picture, we miss The Great Commission.”

On social media, Franklin’s comments have sparked a range of reactions.
One X user tweeted,
“He ain’t lying. I don’t plan on voting this November, but it’s amazing how Christians will throw away their religious beliefs for flawed individuals who claim the same faith. Goes to show, you tend to get far by telling folks what they want to hear, cultish behavior.”
Another commenter, critical of Franklin’s statement, noted:
“He needs to stop. Who is holding Biden and his admin accountable? It works both ways.”

During the interview, Franklin also addressed the misconception that mere church attendance equates to true Christian faith:
“Going to church don’t make you a Christian no more than being in a garage makes you a car. It doesn’t mean that just ’cause you go to church you got it all together. We gotta realize that the focus of our attention should not be the pastor, it should not be the podium, it should not be the pews, it should be Him [God]. He is the star, He’s the MVP, He’s the VIP, we’re his groupies, and we’re there to big him up.”

Additionally, in his discussion of marriage and other aspects of Western Christianity, Franklin argued that these concepts have been weaponized, stating:
“I believe that marriage has been weaponized in Western Christianity … It’s a prerequisite for identity that if you don’t have a man or you don’t have kids, something about you is broken. Do you understand how dysfunctional these messages are? And how we super-spiritualize these messages.”
Franklin also noted that many people marry under societal pressure, only to face harsh judgment when their marriages fail.
