Chiefs Star Chris Jones Offers To Pay $1.5 Million For Release Of Illinois Woman Sentenced To 9 Years In Prison Over Chicken Wings Theft Scheme
NFL star Chris Jones wants to donate to a woman jailed for stealing thousands of chicken wings.
The 30-year-old declared his intention to cover the $1.5 million worth of stolen government goods after learning about the woman’s 9-year sentence.

Chris Jones addressed the matter on X (formerly Twitter). Reposting a story about former Chicago school district official Vera Liddell, who was recently handed a near decade-long prison stint after pleading guilty to being involved in a scam thieving food from public schools, the athlete wrote:
“I’ll pay for the wings that she stole to get her free”

According to reports, Vera Liddell, 68, worked as food service director for Harvey School District 152. It’s reported that between July 2020 and February 2022, she picked up and delivered more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings in her personal cargo van.
The food was meant for children learning remotely at the time due to COVID-19 and was available for parents to collect from the school if need be. Liddell was found guilty of theft and operating a criminal enterprise for taking $1.5 million worth of products from the batch for her own use.

Reacting to Jones, who inked a massive five-year $158.75 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs back in March, offering to front Liddell’s bill, many urged him to use his funds elsewhere. Critics took the stance that Liddell did the crime and should do the time. Others, however, seemed to share Jones’ sympathy towards the matter, criticizing the justice system for giving such a harsh punishment for the level of crime committed.
