UPDATE: Trump Pushes IRS To Strip Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status After The University Refused to Scale Back DEI Efforts
Update (April 16, 2025): The Trump administration has requested the IRS revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, citing its “failure to address antisemitism on campus.”
Donald Trump declared Harvard had “lost its way” and shouldn’t receive federal funding. “Harvard has been hiring almost all woke, Radical Left, idiots and ‘birdbrains’ who are only capable of teaching FAILURE,” he posted, also blasting its “plagiarizing President.” Donald Trump added, “Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity.”
Education Secretary Linda McMahon echoed these concerns, saying Harvard has “put its reputation in serious jeopardy” by promoting “divisive ideologies over free inquiry.”
She highlighted a $255.6 million federal contract review and nearly $9 billion in grants under scrutiny. Donald Trump concluded: “Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning.”
The IRS decision, expected soon, could have wide implications.
The Justice Department’s move follows similar action against Columbia University, part of a broader effort to combat campus antisemitism.
What are thoughts on this turn of events?
Original Story (April 16, 2025): Barack Obama is applauding #Harvard after the Ivy League pushed back against the Trump administration’s conditions for federal funding.
In an X post shared this week, Harvard wrote,
“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”

Praising the university, Obama responded,
“Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope other institutions follow suit.”
The Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts after Harvard refused to eliminate DEI programs, implement a mask ban, and make changes to departments accused of “fueling antisemitic harassment.”
